NC Child Statement on “Raise the Age” in Final State Budget

We are thrilled that the final state budget includes raising the age of juvenile jurisdiction for 16- and 17-year-olds charged with misdemeanors and low-level felonies. This policy change will make our communities safer and provide our youth with the best chance for success in life. Our children will no longer be burdened by criminal records as they apply for jobs and college; rather, they will receive family-focused, age-appropriate treatment that is proven to reduce recidivism and improve outcomes. We especially want to thank Representatives Chuck McGrady, Susan Martin, David Lewis, Duane Hall, and Marcia Morey, and Senators Barringer and Britt for their leadership on this issue.
