Joyce E. Munkacsi: Spanking, really?, News & Observer

I have recently relocated to North Carolina from a Northern state. I have found much to admire in the friendly people and the natural beauty of the state.

However, I am now in utter shock and disbelief after reading the Sept. 20 letter “Another Robeson hardship: spanking in schools.” To learn that educators are permitted to take a young student into a closed room and inflict pain upon him with no parameters imposed other than that they should not hurt the child so severely as to require medical care beyond first aid makes me physically ill. Is this not the 21st century?
