Our Issues

Action for Children strives to ensure that every child in North Carolina has the best possible opportunity to reach his or her full potential. Countless crucial factors contribute to child well-being, but we have chosen to focus on four broad areas that, together, make for optimal long term life outcomes for children.

Health

Healthy children have the best opportunity for success in school and in life. All children need access to quality affordable health insurance, preventive health care, a medical home, and specialized services when necessary.

Economic Security

Children living in families that are economically secure have the best opportunity to thrive, succeed in school, find employment and become contributing members of society, able to support their own families when the time comes. For children to meet their full potential, all families need work and income supports, the opportunity to save and build assets, and the opportunity to live in thriving communities that are connected to the mainstream economy.

Education

Children with access to high quality educational opportunities from birth through college and beyond have the best opportunity for long term life success. All children need affordable, high quality early education to prepare them for school success; safe, connected, well-funded, and diverse public schools; and the opportunity to access the resources and support needed to graduate high school and move on to a career or higher education.

Safety

When children feel safe and secure in their homes and communities, they have the best opportunity to grow, learn and become healthy adults, strongly connected to and supportive of their families and communities. We are responsible for keeping all our children safe – from abuse and neglect, from mistreatment in criminal justice systems, from environmental toxins, and from unintended injuries and deaths.
