The author Pearl S. Buck once wrote, “If our American way of life fails the child, it fails us all.”

A recent report from the United Nations Children’s Fund reveals that our country is failing us all.

The UNICEF report compares child well-being in 29 of the world’s most advanced economies. The U.S. ranked 26th in overall child well-being and in the bottom seven countries in material well-being; health and safety; educational well-being; housing and environment; and life satisfaction.

In his inaugural address, Gov. Pat McCrory started by extolling North Carolina’s accomplishments that have earned our state its reputation as a leader in the “New South.” His list of those accomplishments should make all of us feel proud.

A Minor problem, News & Observer (01.04.2012)

Thank you for your important coverage of crimes involving young people ( “Teens accused in killings confound trend,” Dec. 31 news story). The article, however, brought up efforts to raise the age of juvenile jurisdiction without noting one hugely significant fact: Proposals approved by a bipartisan committee of the House Legislative Research Commission would apply only to 16- and 17-year-olds who commit misdemeanors.
