Action for Children and State Farm Insurance have launched a safety awareness campaign to increase familiarity with two new vehicle laws passed by the 2006 N.C. General Assembly. The campaign features an easy-to-understand fact sheet, highlighting two new laws: the backseat safety belt law and the teen driver cell phone ban. 200,000 fact sheets were distributed statewide to teenage drivers. |

This report highlights the fact that safe storage of guns in homes where children reside is critical in preventing unintentional deaths caused by firearms. This report also argues for coordinated statewide efforts to raise awareness of the benefits of safe storage. |

2006 Children's Index - May 2006
The 2006 North Carolina Children's Index includes more than 75 indicators of child and youth well-being in the following areas: child health and safety, economic (in)security, early care and education, child maltreatment, juvenile justice and demographics. The 2006 Index also includes a special section highlighting how the children and youth of
North Carolina are developing in positive ways.

This report highlights the fact that childhood lead poisoning is a serious, yet preventable condition. North Carolina has made exemplary progress in addressing the problem. In 2004, just 1.3% of screened 1- and 2-year-olds had elevated blood lead levels.
