For Parents and Communities

Welcome to the Parents and Communities section of our website.  We are pleased that as a parent or guardian, you have come to learn more about our organization.  Action for Children is a statewide, nonpartisan voice for children and their families.  We work with policymakers, business leaders and communities to make North Carolina the best place to be and raise a child.

As the statewide, nonprofit, nonpartisan organization devoted to improving the well-being of North Carolina's children and youth, Action for Children uses highly-credible research, data collection, advocacy and education to initiate change on behalf of children.  Our work positively influences the knowledge, attitudes and ultimately the actions of a broad cross-section of people across the state to address issues that affect our children.

Action for Children’s policy and research work focuses on the following issues areas: health, safety, early care, education, economic security, child maltreatment and juvenile justice.

We give community leaders, parents and youths, the “tools” they need to advocate on their own behalf.  These “tools” include:

  • Providing timely information on legislation and policy issues affecting children.
  • Alerting community advocates of opportunities to influence state decision-making.
  • Providing training on how to become an effective advocate.
  • Providing forums for legislators and other policymakers to hear young people describe the problems facing children and youths for their perspective.
  • Providing data to community leaders so they will better understand how local children are faring.
  • Providing timely information on legislative and policy issues, such as our 2007 Legislative Agenda.
  • Providing information about advocacy training in the form of our Young Advocates Toolkit: A Guide to Being a Champion for Children.

Action for Children would like to help you keep current on policy issues surrounding children. Subscribing to our eNewsletters will keep you informed on the latest topics and provide you with the opportunity to learn more. Click below to start receiving Action for Children’s eNewsletters today.

We do not provide a direct service focused on individual cases in need of some type of advocacy.  We want to assist parents and guardians in finding the help they are seeking and so have compiled a list of some of the organizations below.  We hope this information is helpful to you.

Contributions from individuals, business and other investors help Action for Children carries out its mission.  A variety of giving levels and payment methods are available.  Visit Make A Donation to learn how you can support our mission with a gift.
