Fellows

Action for Children's Fellows are experts in their fields who have made substantial contributions to improving the well-being of North Carolina's children and youth.  Fellows provide research expertise and insight on key policy issues.

Olson Huff, M.D., Senior Fellow, Health

Following his retirement from clinical practice and his position as Medical Director of Mission Children’s Hospital, Olson Huff, M.D. became the pediatric consultant to the Mission Healthcare Foundation as well as a consultant to the children’s programs of The Duke Endowment. 

Currently, he chairs the Task Force on Obesity and Nutrition and is a member of the Teen Smoking Task Force, both under the N.C. Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission.  He is also a member of the Planning and Oversight Committee of the N.C. Partnership for Children. 

Dr. Huff received his medical degree from the University of Louisville, and his Pediatric residency training was completed at Charlotte Memorial Hospital (now Carolinas Medical Center).  His training in Child Development was completed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
 


Tom Vitaglione, Senior Fellow, Health and Safety

For three decades, Tom Vitaglione served in the N.C. Division of Public Health providing essential services to the children of North Carolina. As chief of the Children & Youth section of the Division of Women's & Children's Health, Tom supervised all health programs for the state's youth including a wide range of prevention and specialized services. He was instrumental in promoting and bringing about the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and was a strong advocate for the Infant Homicide Prevention Act. Tom received his masters in public health from Columbia University.
